Frequently Asked Questions:
What is Disaster Relief?
Disaster Relief involves providing immediate assistance, support, and resources to individuals and communities affected by natural disasters. Our Disaster Relief Ministry is a local Missions ministry of Woodlands Church that is funded and supported by the congregation.
How does Woodlands Church respond to weather emergencies?
Woodlands Church responds to natural disasters by mobilizing our volunteers and resources to affected areas promptly. We collaborate with local authorities to assess needs and provide immediate assistance with tree debris removal and mud & gut assistance in cases of flooding. In extreme cases, such as Hurricane Harvey, we have opened our campus as a 24/7 shelter for those affected by flooding, while government organizations utilized our campus as a place to land and distribute resources.
What specific assistance do you provide to disaster-affected communities?
Our ministry takes action in the aftermath of storms by offering mud & gut services, engaging in vital rebuilding projects, clearing debris and fallen trees, and providing counseling training and support when needed to local pastors.
Where do you focus your disaster relief efforts?
We work closely with local authorities and members of our congregation to assess and address the most critical situations first. Prioritization in disaster relief is based on the severity of impact, vulnerability, and immediate needs. Our most recent outreach efforts have been in Conroe, Humble and Kingwood.
What should I do to be prepared?
It's essential to create an emergency plan and assemble an emergency kit. Your plan should include identifying evacuation routes, establishing a communication plan with family members, and designating a meeting point in case you get separated. Keep important documents, medication, food, water, and other essentials in your emergency kit, and regularly review and update your plan to ensure readiness.
How can I get involved in disaster relief efforts?
Volunteer: Although our deployment is based on natural disasters coming our way, we are actively seeking volunteers to assist with various aspects of disaster relief, such as distributing supplies, providing emotional support, and helping with cleanup and mud and gut efforts. By signing up to serve, you’ll be expressing interest and joining our list of volunteers who receive communications about potential deployments, needs and volunteer opportunities.
Donate: Financial contributions are crucial for funding relief efforts. Consider donating to our Disaster Relief efforts by visiting WC.org/Give and selecting “Disaster Relief” in the giving type drop-down.
Provide Supplies: At times, we host drives for essential items such as food, water, clothing, and hygiene products to local relief organizations. These items are often in high demand during disaster relief efforts. At this time, we do not plan on hosting a drive, but that can change based on the severity of weather and need.
